Admission Standards

Michigan State Law seeks to enroll students who are academically talented and who bring to the classroom a diversity of personal and professional experiences and perspectives. Our goal is to identify individuals who have the potential to excel in their legal studies and the practice of law.

When reviewing an application for admission, Admissions Committee members generally have three questions in mind:

  1. Does the applicant have the potential to succeed and excel as a law student?
  2. What qualities does the applicant possess that we value in a law student and an aspiring member of the legal profession?
  3. How does this candidate compare to others who are seeking admission to this year’s incoming class?

The Admission Committee considers many variables in addition to the applicant’s undergraduate record and highest score on the Law School Admission Test. Though the Committee has no preferences in terms of undergraduate major, the review process attempts to account for rigor of courses taken and how performance in one’s chosen major will serve as a foundation for success in law school. Because the undergraduate record and LSAT score are not relied on exclusively when assessing an application, the committee routinely admits individuals whose numerical “predictors” are lower but who bring to the Law College experiences, skills, or other qualities that the committee values.

Admissions Guide

The table below is provided to help convey the likelihood for acceptance based only on cumulative undergraduate grade-point average (UGPA) and highest Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score. This should be viewed only as a rudimentary tool to assess the possibility of acceptance, given that the MSU Law admissions process accounts for many non-quantifiable factors.

Contact the Office of Admissions to schedule a phone or in-person meeting to discuss admission standards and the application review process.
