Joel Fraser joined the Alvin L. Storrs Low Income Taxpayer Clinic at MSU Law to gain practical legal experience. “The clinics give students hands on experience in a particular area of law--experience practicing law as opposed to the theoretical experience gained in the classroom,” he said.

Joel aided clients with a wide array of tax issues. “Most clients have received some notice from the IRS and we aid in resolving the tax dispute for the taxpayer, whether it be through some form of settlement or collections agreement,” Joel said.

At the clinic, each law student works individually on cases. “However, the environment is very open between students and professors regarding any questions or concerns we have about a specific case,” Joel said. “The clinic professors review our work before it is sent out to the IRS or client. They are always there for support and to answer questions.”

Joel feels that his participation in the Tax Clinic provided him with experience working in a law office environment, and it serves as a resume-booster.
