“I've been able to hone my legal writing, participate in contract negotiation and family/domestic mediation, and get great experience through the clinics."

Lauren Kahre has an undergraduate degree in International Relations, and she wants to pursue her interests further. “I particularly liked MSU law’s diverse course offerings when it came to international law. Most law schools don't offer this many options, or have the classes as consistently,” she said. “I also liked the many clinic offerings at the law school. I think it's important to get ‘real world’ experience in the legal field. I'm currently in the immigration clinic and loving it.”

Lauren’s responsibilities at the Immigration Clinic include client interviewing, filling out applications for visas, and representing clients in Immigration Court in Detroit. The Clinic represents unaccompanied minor children and individuals who fall below the poverty line. “It feels good to know that we are providing a valuable service to individuals that wouldn't be able to afford legal services without us,” Lauren said. “Moreover, the Immigration Clinic has really been instrumental in helping prepare for my career. I feel a lot more confident about walking into a law office someday now that I know how to file paperwork and prepare for court.”

Lauren feels that MSU Law provides a well-rounded curriculum. “Even though there is a lot of reading--it's law school, after all--I've never felt like my head was just stuck in a book,” she said. “I've been able to hone my legal writing, participate in contract negotiation and family/domestic mediation, and get great experience through the clinics. Professors are also very helpful and welcoming. I genuinely feel like the professors at MSU Law want to help students succeed.”
