Directed Studies
- Directed Study Form (PDF)
Beginning Fall 2005, a student must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to take an initial one or two credit Directed Study. To take a three credit Direct Study or a second Directed Study, a student must have a minimum GPA of 2.7. A student must not earn more than 4 credit hours of Directed Study.
The following are accepted guidelines for directed studies:
- The participating student shall produce a paper that is a
maximum of 20 pages long, not counting endnotes, except insofar
as the paper is done to fulfill the Upper Level Writing Requirement.
In the latter instance, the policy regarding the Upper Level
Writing Requirement governs the length of the paper.
- during the course of the directed study, the supervising
professor shall engage in regular meetings with the participating
student and review the student’s work at each step in
the process; and
- during the course of the directed study, the participating
student shall submit at least three documents to the professor:
an outline, a rough draft, and a final draft.
- the supervising professor shall provide written comments concerning the student’s outline, draft(s) and if appropriate the final draft.
Moot Court Directed Studies: With respect to moot court directed studies (that is, competitions for which students receive credit but which are not part of a school-sponsored moot court program), the following policies apply:
- Students must find a faculty member to sponsor the moot
court directed study;
- Moot court class is a prerequisite for any student wishing
to participate in a moot court directed study (unless the type
of competition makes a different course prerequisite more appropriate);
- Participating students must produce a paper (which could
be a brief and which will not necessarily be subject to the
30-page minimum for other directed study papers);
- Successful completion of a moot court directed study is
reflected on students transcripts as directed study credit;
- It is within the discretion of the Law Colleges administration
to fund moot court directed studies; and
- No student may participate in any competition where the law school, through one of its programs, will be sending selected representatives to compete
