Introduction to Clinical Programs
Get "practice-ready" * enroll in one of MSU Law's great clinical law programs * the Rental Housing Clinic, the Tax Clinic, the Chance at Childhood Clinic, and the Small Business/Nonprofit Clinic (note: this clinic is by invitation only after an interview process). Student clinicians in all of these clinics acquire amazing client and practice skills * skills that most first-year associates only wish they had! During your very first week in these clinics, you may well be meeting with and interviewing clients (all three clinics), arguing a motion in District Court (the Rental Housing Clinic), negotiating a resolution for a client with the Internal Revenue Service (Tax Clinic), or starting work on by-laws for a nonprofit organization (Small Business Nonprofit Clinic). Sounds scary at the beginning * and it is * but by the end of each semester, our clinicians are transformed into capable, confident problem-solvers who can tell a prospective employer that they are, indeed, "practice-ready." We don't bore you with a tiny case load that we work through each semester at a snail's pace. Instead, our pace is that of the vibrant, modern law firm, in which the workload is significant and varied and client expectations are high. In all three clinics, you are the attorney * you have responsibility for your clients and their files, you develop the case strategy, you research applicable law, you obtain the needed results. Your supervisors are available to you for expert guidance, but in nearly every respect, this is the opportunity you've been waiting for to join legal theory with hands-on practice.
