U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Richard F. Suhrheinrich Named President

East Lansing, Michigan. - The Board of Trustees of the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University has elected the Honorable Richard F. Suhrheinrich as president and chairman. He will replace outgoing president George N. Bashara, Jr.

Suhrheinrich currently serves on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He was appointed to this position in 1990 by President George Bush. Before that he served as a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan after being appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984. He graduated from the Detroit College of Law in 1963 and was senior class president.

He will serve a one-year term that can be extended yearly for five years at the pleasure of the board.

"I am looking forward to working with my colleagues on the DCL/MSU board as we pursue our mission of providing students with a practical legal education that meets the needs of a complex and fast-paced society," said Suhrheinrich.

Suhrheinrich, who has served on the board since 1985, has been closely involved with several significant DCL/MSU projects in the last year, including the dedication of the new Law College Building on the campus of Michigan State University (an event that featured former president Gerald R. Ford), the creation of the college’s first endowed chair (The Frank J. Kelley Endowed Chair in Ethics), and the unveiling of a State Bar of Michigan legal milestone plaque.

Vice-chairs: Peter J. Palmer (vice president and assistant general counsel, Kmart Corporation), Raymond R. Behan (Schram, Behan and Behan), and Clifton Haley (former president, Budget Rent-A-Car)

Secretary: The Honorable Marianne O. Battani (Third Judicial Circuit, Wayne County)

Assistant Secretary: David L. Porteous (Porteous & White, P.C)
