Spartan Lawyer Summer 2018

A Message from the Dean

Dear Spartan Lawyers and Friends,

This summer, we are celebrating MSU Law’s origins and continued connections in Detroit. Though we no longer teach on Elizabeth Street, our students and graduates are finding their way back to the city where it all began.

In this issue of Spartan Lawyer, we are proud to recognize MSU Law’s rich heritage by featuring the stories of six MSU Law alumni who are playing a part in Detroit’s ongoing revitalization. These men and women run their own businesses, and use their legal skills to help others do likewise. They support community developers, preserve the architectural legacy of the city, and bring their careers full circle to benefit an iconic American city.

None of them attended classes in the old Detroit College of Law building; their legal educations took place in our current home here in East Lansing. Yet these six alumni exemplify the ethos of our origins: tenacity, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a commitment to serving the community.

Of course, not all of our alumni are Detroiters – our 12,000 graduates are living and working in every state in the country, and all over the world. But regardless of where your career takes you, perhaps you recognize those qualities in yourself. They are readily apparent to me whenever and wherever I meet our alumni.

I’m also happy to celebrate the bright futures of our most recent graduates, the Class of 2018, and welcome them to the MSU Law alumni family.

I would like to recognize the generosity of our donors. Through your contributions to our Annual Fund and our scholarship initiatives, we can continue dedicating resources to educating tomorrow’s passionate, talented advocates. Whether it’s a donation to our Annual Fund, an endowed scholarship, or a planned estate gift, your support has never been more necessary, or more appreciated. On behalf of a grateful MSU Law community, thank you.

Finally, I hope that you and your loved ones have a healthy and restorative summer, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

Regards,

Lawrence Ponoroff
