Welcome! Now Let’s Get Started!

Completion of the following tasks will enhance your Global Food Law (GFL) student experience:

  • Activate your Net ID & set up your Michigan State University (MSU) email account
    • (You may need to reactivate your account if you have previously taken courses at MSU.) Directions, including your PID and PAN are available in your student application portal.
    • You are responsible for all information communicated to you via email. All official communication regarding classes, billing, graduation, and other matters are sent to your MSU email. Any communication from you to MSU faculty, staff or offices must originate from your MSU account.
  • Schedule an appointment with your Academic Advisor
    • Students work with their advisor to enroll in the courses of their choice in any given semester, choosing from the menu of courses provided by the Law College. Advising is done in a variety of ways including email, phone, Skype and occasionally in person. Follow the link in the welcome email you received or email globalfood@law.msu.edu and request an appointment.
    • Your advisor is here to help with a variety of things. You will receive regular communication from them through email and the Global Food Law Student Community. Reach out to them as well.
  • Access Student Information System and verify enrollment in your first semester course.
  • Confirm your attendance and pay your tuition bill in Student Information System.
  • Review the materials in the Orientation folder of the D2LGlobal Food Law Student Community.
    • You will be added to the community once you are enrolled in your first course and are a member of the Desire2Learn “Global Food Law Student Community” for the life of your degree. You will find the community on your D2L home page, under “My Courses” → “Communities.”
    • The orientation is designed to acclimate you to the Global Food Law Program and the study of law. It is important that you work through the orientation and review the other resources available to you in the community. The community is structured in a similar manner to the courses. Exploring and understanding how the community works will help as you begin your studies.
    • You are encouraged to dive into the community and make it yours. Upload a photo and introduce yourself to your fellow students in the student-to-student discussion forum. Find out what courses they’ve taken, how they balance work, family and studies, get career advice, etc.
    • The student community is your “one stop shop” for information on the program. Here, you will find an orientation to the program; quick links and resources; industry news; and updates about the program. Tools found in the Resource module and videos in the Basic Legal Learning folder were created based on comments and suggestions from other students. We encourage you to reference them as often as needed.
  • Familiarize yourself with MSU and College of Law policies.
    • These can be found in the Orientation folder of the D2L Global Food Law Student Community.
  • Read, sign and return the required new student forms.
    • The required forms (Acknowledgment of Policies and Plagiarism Policy) can be found in the Global Food Law Student Community as well as in the student application portal. A hold may be placed on your account preventing future enrollment if the forms are not received.
  • View the “Basic Legal Learning at MSU” content folder in the D2L GFL Student Community page.
    • The Basic Legal Learning at MSU folder contains short videos designed to help those that are new to the study of law, learn some basic law school techniques.
    • The Community contains videos and other resources to help throughout your time in the program.
  • Verify course start date and order textbooks.
    • The College of Law Academic Calendar can vary from MSU’s academic calendar. It is important to check the College of Law website for critical dates such as billing, registration, and holidays.
