2022 Competition Information

2022 Competition Information

From March 19-20, 2022, Michigan State University College of Law hosted the first National Moot Court Competition focusing on issues of Gender, Sexuality, and Law. The competition was hosted virtually with all rounds of arguments held over Zoom online.

In 2022, the competition featured 16 teams representing 13 Law Schools (Table 1: Participating Law Schools 2022) which saw 32 Advocates compete in three preliminary rounds. The top eight teams advanced to the quarter finals for the elimination rounds, four teams advanced to the semi-final rounds, and two teams competed for the final round of the competition.

2022 Final Round

The 2022 final round was judged by:

  •  JUDGE JUDITH E. LEVY, United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan
  • ATTORNEY CAROLE STANYAR, Appellate Attorney whose expertise is complex state and federal litigation (Responsible for Deboer v. Snyder (MI Marriage Case) consolidated with other cases) and captioned as Obergefell v. Hodges, 135 S. Ct. 2584 (2016))
  • PROFESSOR PHILLIP A. PUCILLO, Professor, Michigan State University College of Law

2022 MSU College of Law Student Involvement
The Student Leadership Team for the Competition included Abigail Cote (’22), Erin Shrum (’22), and Joshua Cambri (’24). Abigail worked in conjunction with Professor Johnson to research and write the competition problem. Erin Shrum contributed to the competition bench brief shared with all volunteer judges. Josh Cambri worked the entirety of the two-day competition helping to facilitate student bailiffs and Zoom Courtrooms.

The MSU Law team comprised of Taylor Mills (’23) and Skylar Steel (’23) made it to the semi-final round before a narrow loss to Seton Hall Law School, who went on to win the competition in the final round.
