Dean Linda Sheryl Greene Joined the College of Law
Dean Greene’s decanal tenure began on June 1, 2021. She joined MSU Law after an extensive search, transitioning from her previous position at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Law, where she served on the faculty as a full professor since 1989.

Professor David Blankfein-Tabachnick Recognized as Teacher-Scholar
Professor Blankfein-Tabachnick was recognized as MSU Law’s first recipient of a Michigan State University Teacher-Scholar Award. The award recognizes MSU’s finest early-career teachers who “have earned the respect of students and colleagues for their devotion to and skill in teaching.”

MSU Law Contributes to Prioritization of Ethics
MSU Law’s Dean Linda Sheryl Greene, Sanjay Gupta, the dean of the Eli Broad College of Business, and Christopher P. Long, dean of the College of Arts and Letters, collaborated to share their thoughts on ethics and its place in higher education at the 2021 MSU Ethics Symposium, part of a larger initiative being undertaken by the university.

New Leadership for the MSU Law Clinic
After serving as the clinic director since 2017, Clinical Professor Veronica Thronson stepped down from the role at the end of July, and Professor Kathryn Fort took over leadership on August 1, 2021.

On August 18, incoming first-year law students arrived for their first day of Summer Immersion at MSU Law. The Class of 2024 includes 246 students, and we safely welcomed them and their peers of 2Ls and 3Ls to campus after more than a year of online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students Take Championship Title at Billings Exum Frye Moot Court Competition
3Ls Makenzie Sipes, Lauren Legner, and briefwriter Haley Regan were the champions of the Billings Exum Frye constitutional law competition hosted by Elon University School of Law in October! It was the largest competition that MSU Law students participated in during the fall semester.

MSU Law Professor Kathryn Fort Supported ICWA Cases Across the Nation
Professor Fort worked with the Chickasaw Nation in the case of People in Interest of K.C. and L.C., arguing before the Colorado Supreme Court. She also co-submitted a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court (PDF) in September on behalf of the Cherokee Nation, Oneida Nation, Quinault Indian Nation, and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, asking the Court to review the Fifth Circuit’s ICWA decision.

The Restatement project was launched in 2012 and, including this year’s Proposed Final Draft, Professors Fletcher and Singel with their colleague, Kaighn Smith, Jr., of Drummond Woodsum, produced 25 project drafts. This is the first Restatement on this important area of law.
