The AP reported that Asma Uddin, a professor at MSU’s College of Law, argued many American politicians are depicting ordinary Muslim religious practices as evidence of political danger amid a wave of anti-Sharia rhetoric from Republican leaders. Sen. Ted Cruz said “Sharia law has no place in America” at a recent convention, while Texas Gov. Greg Abbott vowed to “fully ban Sharia law in Texas.” Muslim American civic leaders defended Sharia as positive guidance with elements common to other faiths. The Sharia-Free America Caucus, with more than 60 congressional members, has introduced several anti-Sharia bills, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations has designated the caucus an anti-Muslim hate group.
